Serums are currently my must-have, go-to, everyday requirement. I love them, and many people I talk to about skincare seem to have the same passion for them. On the other side of the fence, there are people who have never tried serums. However, that is a fact that doesn’t surprise me. Serums can be scary.

Until a couple of years ago I didn’t know what a serum was. Was it just something skincare companies invented to get us to buy more products? Well, I can definitely say, without a doubt, that serums are not just a load of baloney. Sure, they can be one of the most expensive products in your skincare regime, but they are actually worth it. They do things no other skincare product has been able to do, but what exactly are they?

My top 5 serums …. read the reviews below to find out what they are

What Is A Serum?

Lets first look at the official meaning, courtesy of eHow:

“Serum consists of the liquid component of blood. Serum can be derived by taking whole blood and then modifying it. This modification involves taking out the blood cells via centrifugation. The term “serum” is derived from Latin, and can refer to many types of fluids, including that which is found in blisters as well as other compounds of medical relevance.”

Ok, that is utterly gross. Luckily that is not the serum I am talking about. Lets refer to the amazing beauty blog, The Beauty Snob:

“A serum is a skin care product that has a higher concentration of active ingredients, usually comes in a gel or creamy gel form and is meant for use under a moisturizer or mask. Cleanser, toner and moisturizer are a must for every skin type. Serums should be used when you feel like your skin is in a rut and you’re not getting the results with your basic products. Serums can really make a big improvement!……”

Much better.

My Top 5

Now that you know what serum is, I am going to share with you my current Top 5 (in no particular order) and why they are rocking my world.

DMK – Direct Delivery Vitamin C Serum

30mL – AU $159 from DMK / USA & UK visit DMK for stockist details

It is no secret I adore everything Dannè Montague-King creates, but if I had to pick only one product I could use from his line for the rest of my life, I would pick this one. Vitamin C is what I call a ‘miracle worker’ when it comes to skincare, but only if you have it in the right product. Before I tried the DMK Vitamin C serum I thought the whole ingredient was  a bunch of hoopla. I tried so many types and none of them did anything for me. This one truly works. It makes me skin vibrant and evens out most of that ‘dirty’ skin tone I get around my mouth.

This serum has a runny-gel texture, a slightly medical scent, it spreads easily and unless you have really thirsty skin you only need a tiny amount (about half a pump). It can leave your skin feeling slightly tacky until it is all absorbed, and it is important that you always let your skincare products absorb before moving on to the next one.

Lancôme – Blanc Expert Whiteness Activating Spot Eraser

30mL – AU $118 from Myer and David Jones / US $65 / UK – not available

I have pretty much eliminated most of my freckles and sun spots thanks to IPL, but unfortunately I do have a handful of spots that cannot go near a laser. For those few spots, I turned to Lancôme’s spot eraser. While I know that no topical beauty product can get rid of moles or other hideous sun spots, all I wanted was to reduce their appearance. After 5 weeks of once daily application I noticed the spots had gone from almost black to medium brown. It was a significant difference and it has been getting better as I continue using the product.

The packaging is like is a long top with a long fine tip. You only need a tiny dot of this product for each of the spots you want to lighten, so the fine tip helps to squeeze out a minimal amount but you still need to be gentle. The formula is pretty much like cream but far lighter, it has a slightly off-white colour and a mild floral scent.

Biotherm – Skin.Ergetic Energy Up Complex Fresh Serum

50mL – AU $74 / USA $48 / UK £37.80

Out of my top 5, this Biotherm serum is the newest release, and one with a unique difference. I shared with you my initial thoughts on Biotherm’s new Skin.Ergetic range last month but in case you have forgotten, this is the one that comes with the active ingredient packaged separately and you add it yourself. Very cool. I have been using this serum specifically on my neck and decolletage in addition to my usual DMK regime. I have found my skin is loving the extra attention moisture during the winter and it has improved the overall look of the skin, not so ‘grey’.

The formula is a runny-creamy-gel and white in colour. It is packaged in a beautiful glass bottle with an eye dropper so you can apply just the amount you need without any mess. The fragrance is definitely a stand out for me; zesty and fresh, but not overwhelming. It is just the best smell for something you are applying to your face in the morning.

Dermalogica – UltraCalming Serum Concentrate

50mL – AU $81 / US $52 / UK £49

When I suffer from allergies, which is often, it hits me everywhere. My face becomes itchy and red, and calming that sort of reactive skin down can be really difficult. I also experience the same reaction after long haul flights. When I discovered this Dermalogica serum last year it instantly graduated to my post-flights essentials kit. It is really soothing on my irritated skin and it almost instantly provides hydration to my lifeless face.

Technically ‘serum’ isn’t a word I would associate with this product because the formula is substantially thicker than most serums, but it is much thinner than cream so I guess that one is open to interpretation. It has quite a noticeable herbal scent which comes from all the healthy ingredients. The fragrance of this one is a little too much for me to use on a twice daily basis but I love it for the quick results it gives me in times of need.

La Prairie – Cellular Radiance Concentrate Pure Gold

30mL – AU $930 / US $580 / UK £387

Ok it may seem like a totally ridiculous cost but this serum is every bit a luxurious experience. La Prairie are a brand that I aspire to, I look up to. They produce products that not only work, but actually make you feel special and well cared for. Their Cellular Radiance Concentrate Pure Gold is one of the most, if not most, expensive product they produce. I have never been blessed enough to own a bottle of this stuff but I do have a deluxe sample (estimated 5mL) that I treasure with my life. When I want to treat my skin to an unbelievable luminous glow, this is the product I turn to. It contains many amazing ingredients but the most visible is the 24k pure gold. My skin feels silky smooth and it glows so much that you would think I have swallowed a fluorescent light bulb.

The serum texture is exactly what I think of when I hear ‘serum’, its a runny, thick liquid. Its silky and slick, and you require very little to get your skin glowing. It does contain Hyaluronic Acid which we all know is a wonderful anti-aging ingredient, but as I only use this serum for special occasions I cannot comment on its effectiveness on specific claims. If you want a truly luxurious experience, you can’t go past La Prairie. If you want the ULTIMATE luxurious experience, this is the serum for you!
