Short for dihydroxyacetone, a simple non-toxic sugar mainly derived from plant sources, eg sugar beets. DHA is the active tanning ingredient in all self-tanning products. It reacts with the amino acids on the skin surface resulting in brown colouring. It does not wash away but fades gradually over a period of days in conjunction with the skin’s natural exfoliation process. Safe to use, it does not damage skin and is considered the most effective self-tanning additive available.
