Menthol Oil

Obtained from peppermint or other mint oils, or made synthetically. It is antipruritic (reduces itching) and has a cooling effect on skin. Found in decongestants, deodorants, perfumes, preparations for muscular and joint pain, and products for minor mouth and throat irritations, such as lip balms and cough medicines. Menthol oil should be kept away from eyes and mucus membranes, and may cause contact dermatitis or other types of rash if applied topically. Pure menthol is poisonous.
