Menthol, the main active ingredient in peppermint, has a soothing and cooling effect when applied to skin, and is used to treat itching and skin irritation such as hives. Known for its invigorating and stimulating effects (reaped through foot creams and scrubs), it is also used in oral products to treat bad breath and gum infections, and in insect repellents. The extracts of the leaves and oil are believed to have medicinal properties (anti-microbial).
