Telomerase is a complex enzyme that affects telomere synthesis. Telomeres look like shoe laces and are found on the end of chromosomes containing DNA. As we age the telomeres shorten, which signals the end of cell reproduction. Telomerase has the ability to prevent the telomere from shortening and is therefore said to ‘immortalise’ the skin cells. Telomerase research is being used for pioneering developments to treat ageing diseases and cancer.
