A chemical with anti-bacterial and antimicrobial properties, popular in personal care products such as acne creams, cleansers, antiperspirants, toothpastes and hand soaps. There are health concerns surrounding triclosan: its overuse may contribute to antibiotic resistant bacteria, and triclosan reacts with chlorine in tap water to form chloroform, a known carcinogen. Another concern is that it is known to react with other intermediates to form dioxin.
