Essential foods for healthy living

With so many diets, fads, weightless programs and the overall push towards fitspiration, it’s hard to know what you should and shouldn’t be changing in your life. A desire to get healthy is the hardest part, once you have the desire the rest won’t seem like a massive effort but what’s the first thing you can do upon making that realisation? Change your fuel!

Food is the fuel of our bodies and the simplest improvement you can make to your body is to change the fuel you’re putting in. With the addition (or increased intake) of these 3 foods you can be on your way to looking and feeling better than you ever have before.

Water

Achhhh, I know, water is boring! I’m the worst at drinking water. It’s bland and unless it’s ice cold it feels all kinds of wrong. BUT, water is essential. Switch out at least 2 glasses of soda, coffee/tea or alcohol each day and you will notice an improvement pretty quick. Water is vital for hydration and even though more emphasis is put on its beauty benefits than it should, the fact is that hydrated organs do function better and our skin is the largest organ. The healthier your organs, the healthier you will look and feel.

Leafy Greens

Other than water and oxygen, leafy greens would be the third most essential item a human can get in their body. They’re pack full of fiber, vitamins, minerals, and plant-based substances that may help protect you from a wide variety of health concerns including heart disease, diabetes, and maybe even cancer. They have a healthy benefit on nearly every part of your body without introducing cholesterol, bad fats or hormones.

If eating an abundance of dark leafy greens (i.e. kale, collards, turnip greens, spinach, broccoli) is a little overwhelming for you straight away, start with a superfood powder like The Super Elixir that can be added to food or drink. It delivers 45 key ingredients carefully combined in scientifically calculated ratios sourced from organic wholefoods. It’s free from dairy/gluten/preservatives and suitable for vegetarians & vegans.

Chia Seeds

These little seeds are more than just a garnish for hipsters’ acai bowls. You’d never guess that something so small can pack such benefits but chia seeds are primarily made up of protein, good fats, dietary fibre, and a bunch of minerals including calcium, magnesium, iron, and phosphorous. They’re high in omega-3’s so they’re an equal alternative to fish on the nutrition front but they’re even better for you because there is no risk of mercury or other nasties. They also keep you full for longer and can be used as a savoury or sweet ingredient in almost everything you already consume.
