April Fools Day has never been so much fun since we have social media and websites to utilise in our pranks. This year there were so many great pranks from all sorts of companies but the ones I found most entertaining were beauty related. Here is my roundup of the best beauty pranks from April Fools Day 2013.
Zoya Nail Polish
Zoya gets top place this year for their hilarious and utterly remarkable innovation, Grassy Nail. They announced their revolutionary development on their blog, complete with strikingly realistic imagery, how-to instructions and nail art suggestion. It might sound ridiculous to grow grass on your nails but this prank fooled many and in my case, it left me wondering about the possibilities.
At US $99.95, we probably would have considered purchasing it. See the original post on the Zoya blog.
The nail brands got us again, this time from OPI as they announced they would finally be making their iconic nail colours available as interior paint! We think the best pranks are the most realistic ones so naturally we were disappointed when they rolled out the “GOTCHA”. In a mock collaboration with US-paint company, Sherwin Williams, 5 hot hues were set to refresh our house including popular shades You Don’t Know Jacque, So Hot It Burns and Do You Lilac It?

Funky online retailer and fashion brand, Free People, took the hair chalk craze to a believable height with their announcement of Fur Chalk for Pups. Playing a trick on hipsters everywhere, doggy parents could now match their dog with their own hair highlights. While I would never do this to my dogs you have to admit it is a funny prank to even consider releasing such a product.

There wasn’t much effort taken in Gillette’s April Fools joke but we thought it was funny nevertheless. From their Gillette Venus Twitter account they tweeted out an announcement of their latest Venus model, the Octo-razor. Offering 8 blades would give you an ultimately close shave …. and probably take off some skin as well.
The nail polish brands are just a bunch of pranksters, aren’t they? Julep almost got me with this man-inspired collection, Julep Manven (a play on Julep Maven). Wouldn’t you wear a collection of lacquers inspired and worn by the men of Julep? I actually thought Bro Glam and It Guy could have really worked, but these colours are in fact already part of the Julep collection and already have fantastic girly names. To make up for the joke, Julep really are selling those 5 shades at 50% off just for April Fools Day so why not go grab the colours you would want to paint on your man?
See the prank on Julep’s website.
Fragrance-loving cat ladies may have been taken for a ride when Sephora asked their Facebook fans to vote for which fragrance they should release next, both of which had been inspired by cats. Here Kitty Kitty and Fluffy were the two options, each offering notes of catnip and salmon, would be ideal for the lady hoping to lure cats just by walking down the street. Personally, I think Here Kitty Kitty sounds more appealing, what do you think?

The global mineral makeup favourite got in on the action with the release of their latest foundation, Invisible Coverage. The makeup is so light and natural you will feel like you are not wearing any makeup at all. I see the joke now but I think in another decade it won’t be so outrages to see a clear product giving us a perfect coverage ….. you just never know how the world of cosmetics will play out.
