2014 Breaking Beauty News

It may only be the first working week of the new year but the beauty news hasn’t stopped. 2014 is already turning to be out a big year for beauty so before the year flies before our eyes we want to take a quick look at what we can expect. Here are some of the breaking headlines over the past few weeks.

Revlon is exiting China

It’s hard to think that Revlon could be considered a struggling business but when it comes to their operations in China they haven’t been doing too well. Without getting into all the boring financial stats and figures, Revlon’s consumption in China has been decreasing over the last couple of years. The casualties of this decision will be the 1,100 staff who will lose their jobs, including 940 beauty advisers retained indirectly through a third-party agency.

On the positive side, speculatively, could this mean Revlon will be able to gain the trust of PETA, Cruelty Free International and other cruelty-free organisations as they exit the only country requiring their products be tested on animals? We hope so. If you aren’t familiar with the PETA & Revlon debacle you can read about it on the PETA blog. A China without Revlon is a big win for animal activists.

Move over DD, EE is here

BB, CC and DD cream – they are the alphabet-titled creams that have ruled the beauty markets for the last 3 years consecutively. This year one company is making a play by launching an EE product. Previse Skincare EE MarineGranules is a botanical-based marine mousse which can be added to a traditional cleanser for “extra exfoliating” results. Just like the other alphabet products, this one is said to offer multiple benefits – cleansing and exfoliating.

Launching in March, the $40 exfoliator will be available from Previse and selected spas, medi-spas and doctor’s offices.

Rise to Beyonce’s latest fragrance

Beyonce is expanding her fragrance offering with the launch of a new pillar, Rise. This third pillar comes after huge success with her first, Heat, and the second, Pulse. Breaking away from the mostly fruity notes of her previous potions, Rise is said to be more of a sexy and sophisticated scent.

According to the perfumer, the heart of the formula is gold symphony orchid, known as the queen of orchids. That note got an extra shot of personality and color when it was paired with golden apricot. There’s also a strong jasmine element. In addition to the apricot, the top note consists of Italian bergamot and iced basil sorbet. The gold symphony orchid is in the midrange, along with freesia blossom and natural jasmine sambac. The base is composed of autumn woods, cashmere musk and vetiver extract, which are meant to ground the fragrance and give it additional sensuality and texture.

Due to hit stores from beginning of February, the 1oz. eau de parfum will set you back USA $39.

Burberry opens Beauty Box

Beauty Box is the new retail concept store created by Burberry, and it’s first residence is in London’s up-market neighbourhood of Covent Garden. The two-storey store stocks the brands makeup, fragrance and accessories but has taken a digital approach to bring its beauty looks to life. This is instantly recognised by the chandelier made of iPads suspended from the ceiling which show seasonal Burberry beauty content, while screens fashioned into the shape of a Burberry check play moving content in the store’s windows.

If there is one thing to make me want to jump on a plane to the UK it would be this – A digital runway nail bar uses polishes embedded with RFID chips that allow customers to virtually test nail colors on different skin tones on a screen. The Beauty Box Bar also has a stylist on hand to advise customers how to combine makeup and accessories purchases, which can then be packaged as gifts. And furthermore, the store also offers mini-manicures, a fragrance consultation and complementary beauty consultations. It’s Burberry Beauty heaven and the company has said they plan to roll out Beauty Box to more locations. My fingers are crossed that Sydney is one of them!

L’Oréal Professionnel recruits Kirsten Dunst

I’m happy to hear one of my favourite actresses has been named as the first ever L’Oréal Professionnel spokesperson. Dunst will front the launches of Wild Stylers from Tecni.Art, Beach Waves and Absolut Repair Lipidium in 2014. Kirsten had this to say about the appointment:

L’Oréal Professionnel empowers hairdressers to transform and reveal the beauty in each woman all over the world. It makes me very proud to be a part of this stunning project.

Philosophy’s expanding range

I’m a big fan of the innovative skincare products made by Philosophy so I’m very excited to hear they will be launching more genius products in 2014. Unfortunately we don’t get the makeup range in Australia but for those of you in the USA keep an eye out for the Miracle Worker Anti-Aging Liquid Makeup SPF 30. It features the same technology as the Miracle Worker skincare line, with a barrier complex to help moisturize and sweep away dullness, plus a dose of Vitamin C. It will retail for USA $40 for 1 oz. and will be available in eight shades. A related concealer using the Miracle Worker technology will be available in four shades for USA $25 each.

Next up is the Hope in a Jar Light-As-Air Hydrating Fluid Makeup SPF 20, which offers light to medium coverage. It’s intended to fortify and hydrate skin, the same benefits offered by the original Hope in a Jar, and will retail for USA $39 with availability in eight shades.

Miracle Worker Overnight Age-Resetting Anti-Wrinkle Moisturizer is due in March. The product is based on research which posits that as people age, their skin accumulates increasing amounts of age-accelerating proteins, known as progerins. The key technology is a proprietary Age Resetting Complex, which contains a marine algae said to curtail progerins. The complex also includes Vitamin C8 and peptides to help support collagen. It will retail for USA $68.
