Unico Hair Melbourne Shampoo

Voluminous hair, I want you! But, I don’t want to work too hard for you. I pretty much just want you to appear every time I was my hair. Is that too much to ask?

I’m not alone with the above internal conversation, am I? Big hair is hot, and it always seems just out of reach for us fine haired girls. That’s why I’m trialling every volumising shampoo and conditioner I can find. Did this duo from Melbourne salon-based brand, Unico, do the trick? Read my review for the answers you seek.

My Review

  • The stubby green bottles look very different to regular shampoo and conditioner bottles but I think they look cool and kind of arty. They are fitted with transparent disk top caps and the bottles do squeeze to get the product out. You can’t invert these bottles when they are running low so that can be the annoying part. The shampoo formula is runny enough to get some out almost immediately upon flipping over but the conditioner is quite thick so you have to give it a couple of hard shakes to get it to the exit point.
  • The shampoo is a clear gel that lathers gently and gives the hair and scalp a thorough clean. I could feel it wasn’t completely drying, enough to leave my scalp squeaky, but it was  drying enough to notice that I needed conditioner. This is highly common for a volumizing formula because it needs to remove anything that could weigh down the hair.
  • The conditioner is a light but creamy formula that spreads into the hair easily without melting enough to drip. It makes my hair smooth enough to brush through with my Tangle Teezer but it still requires a few passes to get through the knotts. It’s one of the most hydrating volumising conditioners I’ve tried, because most volumising conditioners are very light and don’t do much to untangle my fine hair.
  • There is a strong scent from both products but it’s really lovely, like an expensive perfume. It says the shampoo contains essential oils of Cedarwood, Mandarin Orange and Ylang Ylang while the conditioner has essential oils of Cedarwood, Orange and Ylang Ylang. To me they woody-citrus scent is identical. Perhaps my nose isn’t as experienced with fragrance as it needs to be. Either way, most of the fragrance disappears when the products are washed out and the remaining can only be picked up for the first few hours after drying.
  • When blowdried my hair is shiny and soft with a visible lift the roots. My hair appears more plump around the mid-lengths but the ends still looked wispy and thin – as would be expected, nothing can replace a good trim.
  • When I leave my hair to air dry it isn’t as soft and there is only a slight improvement in shine but it still looks fuller in the body.
  • I didn’t find this duo to particularly affect my dyed locks. My colour fade progressed as normal.
