Ban Animal Testing

The news we have all been waiting for is here. Kind of. This week China’s Food and Drug Administration announced a step-towards removing animal testing as a mandatory requirement for cosmetics sold in their country. Cruelty-free beauty shoppers burst into song and dance at the news thinking their favourites will now be back on the Leaping Bunny and PETA’s Beauty Without Bunnies list ….. but the celebrations are a little premature. The news isn’t clean cut and is actually rather confusing so I’m going to tell you what you may be missing from between the lines, and why you should run back to your favourite brands JUST YET.

First, let’s recap the announcement.  Continue Reading

THE BODY SHOP

The business of business should not just be about money, it should be about responsibility. It should be about public good, not private greed.

– Dame Anita Roddick. Human Rights Activist. Founder of The Body Shop

It’s this quote from The Body Shop founder, Dame Anita Roddick, that could perfectly describe what we have been witnessing these past couple of weeks. The beauty world and loyal customers of The Body Shop were rocked to the core when an investigation by Australian magazine CHOICE came forth stating The Body Shop was NOT cruelty-free, as they have been claiming.

I personally do not take claims of cruelty-free status lightly, nor do I take an accusation from a publication as gospel, and I do hope none of you would either. The Plastic Diaries was first and foremost created to inform consumers. I am a consumer too and I like to be as informed as possible before I purchase something. It’s this principle that I have applied to todays post. I am breaking down the battle that has ensued and I hope it will help you to make an informed decision about your purchasing options in the future. Continue Reading

Lush Cosmetics Campaign Cruelty Free Kisses
Did you know that this Saturday, 6 July 2013 is International Kissing Day? Lots of cosmetic brands have arranged different ways to celebrate but one brand in particular has definitely won the campaign rounds in my eyes. Lush Cosmetics is all about cruelty-free kisses this International Kissing Day and they are celebrating with an official Guinness World Record attempt. Oh and this isn’t just for Australia, this is global!

So what do Lush Cosmetics have planned? Listen to this. All of their Lush stores (worldwide) will be asking their customers to pucker up and support their attempt to set the new GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title of the most lip prints collected in 12 consecutive hours. The current record of 22,174 lipstick prints collected in 12 hours is set by Oriflame Slovakia at 89 locations throughout Slovakia on 14 September 2010. Surely we can beat that.  Continue Reading

Banned Animal Testing

Yesterday in Part 1 of my feature about animal testing we looked at the experiments, the reasons behind them and tried to clarify some of the confusing misconceptions. In Part 2 we are going to look specifically at the European Union (EU) ban on animal testing, what it means and if it will have any impact.

The New Ban

To understand the new ban that was implemented on 11 March 2013 you need to know about the ban they started with in 2009. To give you a brief summary, in 2009 the European Union (EU) implemented a ban that cosmetic products and ingredients could not be tested on animals within its borders. This did have some impact but mostly it just moved testing to other parts of the world.

The new European Union ban will make it illegal, from 11 March 2013, to import or market a cosmetic product within the European Union if it contains ingredients that have been animal-tested outside of the EU after 11 March 2013. It therefore prohibits the sale of newly animal-tested cosmetics.

Best Vegan Skincare Brands

Everyone has their own opinion on what skincare should do and be, but for me it’s all about aiming for perfection. I don’t want skincare that does the bare minimum and let’s me age gracefully. I only want to use skincare that WORKS – constantly improving my skin and getting it to function at it’s very best. That’s why I’m sharing with you the best vegan skincare brands.

People often confuse my choice to be vegan as somehow meaning I don’t care about my aesthetics any more. They couldn’t be more wrong! My strict standards for top performing skincare isn’t lessened by my cruelty-free choices. If anything, it makes my standards even higher.

There’s a misconception that cruelty-free and vegan skincare is unable subpar; that they’re less effective than animal-based skincare formulations. While this may have been the case decades ago when vegan skincare exclusively meant “natural” products with little to no scientific basis, skincare development has come a long way since then. Don’t get me wrong, there are still hundreds of natural skincare brands out there that do exactly what I don’t want – they don’t improve your skin, they just make it feel and smell nice – and there is a market for those. Not everyone is deathly afraid of aging like me. However, if you strive for clear, healthy and progressively improving skin despite the years passing us by, than I have exactly what you need.

My list of top performing skincare brands will introduce you to the changemakers. The hard-working, highly efficient skincare that allows you to take charge of your own aging appearance. And it just so happens they’re also the best vegan skincare brands too!  Continue Reading
