Pilates Stretching Exercises

I take my body for granted. I know I have a relatively functioning, young, capable body but in the 28 years I’ve been inhabiting it I’ve done very little to look after it, in the grand scheme of things. I take spa days and I get manicures/pedicures but I neglect the things that will ensure it runs smoothly in the future – READ: muscles. That was until recently when I recommenced physiotherapy and pilates. It’s made a world of difference to my wellbeing but it’s been one key realisation that has changed my way of thinking. We need to stretch ourselves.

I am talking about stretching both physically and mentally but for today we will concentrate on the physical. Our muscles are kind of like rubber bands – if we stretch them regularly they stay in shape and continue to work, but if we leave them unused they dry up and will likely break when we do go to use them. Just like with those rubber bands, a little regular stretching can give us an extended period of use.

Now that I have you thinking about all the rubber bands you have that may be starting to dry-up, let’s hear from an expert on the important topic of stretching. Pilates pro, Peta Serras, has a list of 5 things we all need to know.  Continue Reading

FAT GIRL BEAUTY PROBLEMS

For a long time I’ve been learning startling things about the human body from the TV show, Embarrassing Bodies. Recently I discovered the spin-off, Embarrassing Fat Bodies, and immediately thought to myself,”hey now, isn’t this just going to be a whole show of fat shaming?”. I was wrong, it’s actually incredibly informative but it also made me realise something I hadn’t noticed previously. As I’ve discussed many times, my weight yoyo’s dramatically but something that clicked while I watched this show was that there are certain beauty issues that flare-up when I’m heavier. These are Fat Girl Beauty Problems.

All of these ailments can present in any person – age, weight, race, etc is irrelevant, but I’ve personally found they’re at their worst when I’m carrying extra flub. The emotional and health issues a girl can face from being overweight is enough to deal with. It goes without saying that losing weight is the best solution for these problems but I’m going to tell you how you can ease the burden in the meantime. Barre Body Exercise Training

Barre. It’s the hottest word in fitness right now. More than a passing trend, this will be an exercise that grows to mass popularity just as we have seen with Yoga and Pilates. But what exactly is Barre? When I try to ask my Barre-loving friends what it is they generally give me the same response, “it’s like ballet exercise”. That doesn’t really tell me much so I decided to ask Australia’s reigning Barre expert and founder of Barre Body studios, Emma Seibold, to give us a bit more insight.

These are the 5 things we all need to know about Barre fitness training.  Continue Reading

Swimsuits for Curves Classic vs Stylish

This year I commenced exercising as one of my New Year Resolutions. Normally I give up on my resolutions after a week or two but this year I’ve actually been making great progress. Well, I was. I started swimming (even though I have an irrational fear of putting my head under the water) and I signed up for group circuit training. Despite my swearing and yelling every few minutes during a workout, I actually quite enjoyed moving my fat during the circuit exercises. I was seeing results after just a couple of weeks …. but then pain hit. Big pain.

I have suffered from bunions and foot pain since I was a child. The deformity of the front half of my feet has slowly been making its impact on the rest of my body as I age. While I may look relatively normal from the outside, on the inside I have often unbearable pain in my feet, ankles, knees and now my back. I returned to physiotherapy after a long hiatus and it is there that I was informed that the exercises I was doing were actually causing further damage. The diagnosis, stop what I was doing in favour of low-impact exercise that doesn’t require me being on my feet. Swimming is now my one and only fitness friend.

The problem with swimming for exercise as a full-grown (read: curvaceous) woman is boobs. It must sound like I’m always complaining about big boobs but they really can get in the way of simple tasks. I have lots of cute bikini’s and even one-pieces to wear to the beach or to lay by a pool, but for actual swimming … not so much.

I went on the hunt for the perfect athletic swimsuit for curvy girls. Most women can don a regular Speedo one-piece but does that work for anyone with a D-cup or bigger? Let’s see what I found. Oh and WARNING, there are rolls of fat involved …. avert your eyes if offended. Continue Reading

Beauty blogger Kimberly Nissen of The Plastic Diaries reviews Dermaquest Stem Cell 3D Facial Cleanser

Face cleansers are seen as quite an underrated product in terms of our overall skincare needs, but they’re actually really important. The correct cleanser for your skin should remove dirt, debris and build-up that otherwise gets in the way of your other skincare products delivering their best results. A vast majority of skin issues can be activated simply by using the wrong cleanser. When it comes to anti-aging, it’s essential to not use a face cleanser that is drying or stripping. Hydration is key, and that’s one of the major claims behind the DermaQuest Stem Cell 3D Facial Cleanser.

As I continue my fight against aging and dry skin I’ve tested the DermaQuest Stem Cell 3D Facial Cleanser. Is it worth the price tag? Read on to find out.  Continue Reading

Female Hair Loss Before and After

Female hair loss and hair thinning are a growing sector within the beauty market. I used to think female hair loss was a beauty issue and as such could be treated with beauty products. Self-inflicted hair loss is my most common concern. I blamed my tight braids, hair irons and chemical damage. However, the fact remains that the leading causes for female hair loss are health related.

When my normal amount of hair fall dramatically increased, with noticeable receding of my hairline, I panicked. I didn’t know where to begin with treating it but I couldn’t understand why it was happening. I’d stop styling my hair in tight do’s, I rarely heat style and I haven’t dyed my hair in almost 2 years. I ruled out self-inflicted hair loss so I went straight to my GP (doctor) to ask for advice. It turns out that my female hair loss was completely reversible for less than $20!  Continue Reading

Beauty blogger Kimberly Nissen of The Plastic Diaries reviews Trefiel Lace Face Mask, Moisturising sheet mask skincare.

If you follow beauty on Instagram it’s highly likely you’ve seen the Trefiel Lace Sheet Mask. They look like a piece of black lace, often seen adorning the faces of cute beauty influencers. What they actually are is a range of sheet masks. Really pretty sheet masks.

The Trefiel Lace Sheet Mask is available in four formulations – Moisturising, Brightening, Repairing and Toning. Trefiel initially launched with just the Moisturising mask but later rebranded and added 3 more masks to the line-up. I chose to review their original Moisturising Face Mask.  Continue Reading
