NYFW Beauty Products

I love travelling but for me the worst part is packing (and unpacking, to be honest). I’ve given you a few tips about packing previously but what on earth does a girl pack for New York Fashion Week? It’s a week of post-summer warm weather in a humid city, running around all parts of town, and glitzy fashionistas at swinging soirees. My beauty bag has to carry everything I need to survive the week and even after all these years of attending Australian Fashion Week I still have no idea what to pack until the very last minute.

I try to take miniatures of all my beauty products where possible and I try to avoid sachets or little packets, where possible. I recommend collating deluxe samples when they’re available as gift with purchase offers or as perks from your favourite beauty store (Sephora, I’m looking at you!). These are the beauty products that accompanied me to NYFW 2014.

Laughing woman smile with great teeth

Would you consider your dental hygiene part of your beauty routine? I do, and you should. Having healthy teeth makes a big impact on your appearance but it is often the most neglected part of a beauty routine. I understand why that is though, it can be tedious and boring, it isn’t colourful like makeup and it doesn’t feel nice like skincare, and looking after your teeth can often remind you of the dreaded dentist …. BUT … think of it this way, if you don’t look after your teeth you will be at the dentist sooner and more often than you want to be. As an out-and-proud lazy girl (actually, not necessarily proud of it) I know how easy it is to forget about your teeth but I do everything in my power to keep my teeth healthy so my trips to the dentist are pain-free. I have never needed a filling (touch wood) … and that I am proud of!

I am not going to preach about the importance of professional cleans and regular check-ups because you probably know just how important it is. What I am going to tell you about is how you can keep your teeth healthy, at home and with minimal effort.  Continue Reading

As I get older I am becoming more and more self conscious about my smile. Like most Sydney teenagers 10 odd years ago, I too had a mouth full of metal braces (except I had mine for 3 and a half years. Long story. It will be told another time!). I loathed them, they hurt, they were a nuisance ….. but they gave me a wonderful smile. I would show you a photo but they are stuck on my old laptop that I cannot get to turn on. Nice.

The one thing I was looking forward to when getting my braces off was that I would be able to brush and floss my teeth like a normal person. I wouldn’t have to intertwine floss through metal just to get a bit of food out of my teeth. Unfortunately that wasn’t the case because my orthodontist fitted a permanent plate on my back teeth like this one …..

Now, because of that thin little wire permanently glued to the back of my teeth, flossing is a bitch. Until I started using this toothpaste I had to floss twice as many times every day. Until the other week when I noticed my mothers stash of Piksters. They look like these tiny little pipe cleaners on the end of a plastic stick, and I remember using something very similar back when I had braces.

I read every word on the Piksters packet and it sounded like just want I needed. A mini brush for the gaps near my gums. Genius!

What I Say ….

  • I have a pack (ok I stole a pack from mom) of Size 0 and they work perfectly for my front teeth. They range from size 0 to size 7, and I think I need a size up for my back teeth
  • The first few times I used it on my front teeth Continue Reading

Professional beauty blogger Kimberly Nissen of The Plastic Diaries shares her personal blogger burnout story and experience

This article is Part 1 of a three-part series about my personal experience with Blogger Burnout – My Demise + My Recovery + My Future

I started The Plastic Diaries in 2008, became a full-time blogger in 2010 and vanished from the blogging universe in 2015. Where did I go? Why? What happened to me? These are questions that have been asked of me during my 18+ month disappearance. The short answer was blogger burnout – a rarely spoken of condition that is fast becoming a serious concern amongst the influencer industry. Have you ever followed a blogger and notice that one day they have just disappeared? Their blog stopped posting new content, their social media went untouched – it happens often. In my almost 9 years of blogging I have lost count of the bloggers that have come and gone, most of which I have no idea why or where they went.

Upon my return to blogging at the end of last year I’ve put off explaining what exactly occurred in my life. I confided in a few select friends and trusted individuals about my story but I’ve brushed over it with the wider community by saying the cause was “personal stuff”. I don’t believe bloggers owe anyone an explanation when they disappear but I know that when my favourites have gone AWOL I’ve missed them and been concerned for their wellbeing. I didn’t want to be another blogger who vanished without a trace and leave you wondering. I also believe Continue Reading
