NARS Madison Avenue NYC Store

NARS is expanding their empire by opening two more freestanding stores this month. The new retail spaces are hitting both the east and west coast of the USA, with a move that they hope will deepen the relationship with their makeup artist clientele. Even though I personally am not a makeup artist, I do find that a dedicated retail space for a brand allows me to shop more strategically instead of being overcome with excitement (like what I experience in Sephora) so I can understand why this make appeal more to a makeup artist.

Both stores were designed by Francois Nars (yep, the guy behind the brand) and Fabien Baron of New York design firm Baron & Baron. A consistent design has been implemented across the stores but each have incorporated their own twist by adapting features to fit the city and space. Those that have followed the NARS brand for some time (like me) will know that makeup is not Nars’ one true love – he’s a lover of all forms of art. His love for beautiful photography and books will be showcased in “François’ Favorite Things,”a section exclusive to the free-standing stores that offers an eclectic mix of objects that have inspired Mr Nars. All will be available for purchase and rotated quarterly.

These new stores could be a sign that NARS is looking to expand elsewhere (perhaps, Australia?!?) but for now we’ll take a closer look at what you’ll find in the new USA stores.  Continue Reading

Last month I started a new little monthly segment that showcases my favourite new release beauty products for the month. This month has been huge for launches, at last count 50 new products launching in April came across my desk and it is no easy feat picking my favourites.

Nevertheless, here are the products that won me over.

NARS is one of those brands that I am increasingly falling in love with. Previously, I have only reviewed one of their products, the Dogon Eye Duo, but I am hoping to explore the brand a lot more because what I have tried, I love. I think their newest release, a make-up manual to end all make-up manuals, will give me the push I need to embrace this brand the way it deserves to be.

Makeup Your Mind: Express Yourself is the second release in the Makeup Your Mind book series by François Nars. It is safe to say that this one has been long awaited after this first book, Makeup Your Mind, was released back in 2001.

The hardcover book comes in a plastic sleeve for storage

About The Book

This book/manual is fascinating to a beauty lover such as I. The few facts I have been privy to just made me want to give the man a standing ovation, if I had actually met him. Here are just a few things you need to know about this book:

  • Every one of the women and men (YES, men!) featured in this book are real-life people, not models or actors or people used to having their photo taken.
  • François Nars, the talented man that he is, shot the entire book himself. Every photo you see, he took it.
  • Each look was created by François Nars simply staring at the face of each ‘model’ and applying something that completely complimented them. Nothing was pre-determined. There were no set ideas, i.e.. the book must have 4 smokey-eye looks, etc.
  • The book is divided into three primary categories: Play, Perfect and Polish. Each section is designed for the different stages we as humans move through in life and provides looks to compliment that.

Uniquely, this book doesn’t Continue Reading

Beauty blogger Kimberly Nissen of The Plastic Diaries reviews Dermaquest Stem Cell 3D Facial Cleanser

Face cleansers are seen as quite an underrated product in terms of our overall skincare needs, but they’re actually really important. The correct cleanser for your skin should remove dirt, debris and build-up that otherwise gets in the way of your other skincare products delivering their best results. A vast majority of skin issues can be activated simply by using the wrong cleanser. When it comes to anti-aging, it’s essential to not use a face cleanser that is drying or stripping. Hydration is key, and that’s one of the major claims behind the DermaQuest Stem Cell 3D Facial Cleanser.

As I continue my fight against aging and dry skin I’ve tested the DermaQuest Stem Cell 3D Facial Cleanser. Is it worth the price tag? Read on to find out.  Continue Reading

Female Hair Loss Before and After

Female hair loss and hair thinning are a growing sector within the beauty market. I used to think female hair loss was a beauty issue and as such could be treated with beauty products. Self-inflicted hair loss is my most common concern. I blamed my tight braids, hair irons and chemical damage. However, the fact remains that the leading causes for female hair loss are health related.

When my normal amount of hair fall dramatically increased, with noticeable receding of my hairline, I panicked. I didn’t know where to begin with treating it but I couldn’t understand why it was happening. I’d stop styling my hair in tight do’s, I rarely heat style and I haven’t dyed my hair in almost 2 years. I ruled out self-inflicted hair loss so I went straight to my GP (doctor) to ask for advice. It turns out that my female hair loss was completely reversible for less than $20!  Continue Reading

Beauty blogger Kimberly Nissen of The Plastic Diaries reviews Trefiel Lace Face Mask, Moisturising sheet mask skincare.

If you follow beauty on Instagram it’s highly likely you’ve seen the Trefiel Lace Sheet Mask. They look like a piece of black lace, often seen adorning the faces of cute beauty influencers. What they actually are is a range of sheet masks. Really pretty sheet masks.

The Trefiel Lace Sheet Mask is available in four formulations – Moisturising, Brightening, Repairing and Toning. Trefiel initially launched with just the Moisturising mask but later rebranded and added 3 more masks to the line-up. I chose to review their original Moisturising Face Mask.  Continue Reading
