Occasionally I have mentioned my sensitive teeth, maybe more so on Twitter than on this website, but one thing I know I have mentioned a lot is my dislike for anything mint flavoured. For many years I used Lemonade toothpaste by GoSmile that I had to buy in multiples once a year from Sephora, just because I dont like mint toothpaste. Even though I love my Lemonade toothpaste, I have felt like my sensitive teeth have been particularly bad this past 3 months or so.
Now I don’t know what causes other peoples sensitive teeth, but in my case it is exposed nerves. I have very little gum around the base of my teeth, especially my bottom front teeth, and that means all my nerves are exposed. Almost anytime something comes in contact with that area of my mouth I instantly feel a dreadful pain. I can’t even explain what it feels like because if feels like nothing else in the world. Only those who have experienced sensitive teeth know the torture. The other problem I have because of this minimal gum problem is that the little crevasses food and other bits can hide in are so impossible to reach. Often brushing and flossing just does not do the job to get everything and I will have to double floss or double brush. Annoying!
I have been living with sensitive teeth for as long as I can remember so there are certain things I do in order to avoid getting that pain, but it is hard work. I consciously have to pay attention every time I go to put food or drink in my mouth. I have to make sure I only chew on one side of my mouth, I have to drink through a straw and if no straws are available I can only sip very small amounts so I can strategically manoeuvre my tongue to cover the sensitive area. It is a joke. So finally I have decided to part ways with my beloved lemon-flavoured toothpaste and try something that might rid my sensitivity.
