Beauty Expo 2013 Header Image

This weekend is the Sydney International Spa & Beauty Expo. It is a professional exhibition and conference held annually for those who work in the beauty industry. Anyone from beauty school students through to salon owners and beyond come together for 2 days of education and discovery of the industry we all love. This expo is a trade show so it is definitely not about shopping, but I do find it the best place to find suppliers of quality beauty instruments and products. In fact, beauty expos are responsible for a good chunk of the discoveries I have talked about on The Plastic Diaries. The other thing I love about the expo is that some of the greatest beauty minds come to the show to share their wisdom. Through masterclasses, seminars and live demonstrations we have the opportunity to witness what people have achieved in beauty.

The attendance of the Sydney International Spa & Beauty Expo is always a hot debate amongst professionals, enthusiasts and consumers. From my post last year I did receive public and private comments about the fact I was even allowed in to the show. Last year I was honoured to be attending with a very special role, to judge multiple categories in the Face2Face Makeup Awards. This year I am going just to do my job of uncovering what is hot and to learn new things so I can report back to you, but do you think I should be there? I want you to tell me but before you do, have a look at what I am most excited to check out.

Jeff Pink

Mr ORLY himself, the man who created the french manicure as we know it today, will be taking to the main stage to share his extensive wisdom on nails. I was so lucky to meet the legend during my time at Cosmoprof and I was blown away by his enthusiasm for nails. It is not every day (or even year) you see a man still have passion for the things he created especially when they are nail products. Plus he has a way of speak that truly inspires and reminds you why you fell in love with nails too.

The demo will include Mr Pink and one of my favourite manicurists, Fiona Hay, presenting new ways to take the classic french manicure to the next level. Continue Reading

I have been bursting at the seams to show you these VEGAN nail lacquers! You all know I love Pink. If you didn’t, now you do. Glitter nail polish is something I have only recently become infatuated with. Previously, it interested me, but I was no where near as in love with it as I am now. Of all the glitter polishes in the world at the moment, these three from SpaRitual have excited me the most (well, ok, in the last couple months that is).

SpaRitual is a brand I was completely unfamiliar with. I guess this post could also come under the series of Welcome To My Beauty Cupboard, because until recently, I had never tried nor owned their products. I came across them at Cosmoprof North America this year and was surprised to learn that SpaRitual was created by Shel Pink, the daughter of Jeff Pink (meet him here), creator of ORLY International.

After sharing with you two posts on awesome 2011 Breast Cancer Awareness / Pink Ribbon beauty products, I decided to dedicate an entire post just to these releases from SpaRitual. The collection is called ‘In Pink’ and contains three very special nail polishes with touching names.

I won’t lie. The morning may have started off a little rusty after a little dinner session with Katie Cazorla the night before. I totally blame Katie. She is a bad influence. However, I had no time to be rusty because Day 2 of Cosmoprof North America kicked off bright and early at 8:30am.

Day 2 was all about brands. I wanted to see some brands, experience some of the products and get a glimpse of new releases. Nails seemed to take centre stage on this day and I will be doing a separate post to show just all the amazing stuff we can expect to see over the coming months.

Deborah Lippmann

Manicurist extraordinaire, business maven and surprisingly talented singer, Deborah Lippmann, was extremely kind to offer up her morning to sit with us beauty bloggers to discuss her new collection. If you aren’t familiar with the Lippmann Collection of nail lacquers than you are missing out big time. They are just beautiful!

Deborah talked us through her inspiration behind how she comes up with colours, and it is crazy. Here are some things I learnt that I never knew.

  • Deborah started out in life wanting to be a Jazz singer. She still sings and has released an album, but it is more of a recreational focus.
  • All the names of her nail lacquers name are actually names of songs.
  • She will often have to create colours for celebrities or fashion designers based on their outfits … sometimes with only hours notice.
  • All her lacquers are 3 free (free from Formaldehyde, Toluene and DBP)  and not tested on animals.

Aside from all that, the most refreshing thing about Deborah is how down to earth she really is. She is entertaining, amusing and genuinely sweet. Go girl!

Details: Deborah Lippmann lacquers are available in the US and Internationally. You can purchase online from Beauty Bridge (International Shipping available) or visit the website to find your nearest stockist.

Female Hair Loss Before and After

Female hair loss and hair thinning are a growing sector within the beauty market. I used to think female hair loss was a beauty issue and as such could be treated with beauty products. Self-inflicted hair loss is my most common concern. I blamed my tight braids, hair irons and chemical damage. However, the fact remains that the leading causes for female hair loss are health related.

When my normal amount of hair fall dramatically increased, with noticeable receding of my hairline, I panicked. I didn’t know where to begin with treating it but I couldn’t understand why it was happening. I’d stop styling my hair in tight do’s, I rarely heat style and I haven’t dyed my hair in almost 2 years. I ruled out self-inflicted hair loss so I went straight to my GP (doctor) to ask for advice. It turns out that my female hair loss was completely reversible for less than $20!  Continue Reading

Beauty blogger Kimberly Nissen of The Plastic Diaries reviews Trefiel Lace Face Mask, Moisturising sheet mask skincare.

If you follow beauty on Instagram it’s highly likely you’ve seen the Trefiel Lace Sheet Mask. They look like a piece of black lace, often seen adorning the faces of cute beauty influencers. What they actually are is a range of sheet masks. Really pretty sheet masks.

The Trefiel Lace Sheet Mask is available in four formulations – Moisturising, Brightening, Repairing and Toning. Trefiel initially launched with just the Moisturising mask but later rebranded and added 3 more masks to the line-up. I chose to review their original Moisturising Face Mask.  Continue Reading
