September. The start of Spring (in Australia) and a very welcome change of temperature, while the northern hemisphere move into fall. It is the time where we switch our wardrobes, makeup, skincare and almost every part of our lives. In beauty, we have seen a big change this time around. September is a big month.

So far I have welcomed 98 new products going on sale this month. It is the most new launches I have seen since starting this series in March but I also believe the most in my entire 2 and a bit years of writing The Plastic Diaries. Magnetic nail polish has been a huge trend this year and it is one I spotted back in August 2011 when I was introduced to the Layla Cosmetics brand at Cosmoprof. Since then, but mostly in the last few months, nearly ever major nail polish brand have released their own version. A couple of weekends ago I was at the Sydney International Spa & Beauty doing my thing and browsing around to find all the exciting new beauty innovations coming our way. But then I got distracted ….. and hauled like a crazy lady. Previously, the International Spa & Beauty Expo, which is for the beauty trade only, did not have any sale opportunities. It was all about showcasing new treatments, products, tools and equipment and allowing the beauty industry to meet with the wholesalers/manufacturers directly to wheel and deal. Point of sale was all but extinct, in the past ….

This year, and from what I assume to be because of a tougher economic climate than previously, there were many brands giving people the chance to buy smaller quantities and a slightly discounted expo price (the average was about 10% discount off retail prices). I am all for this because it gives the industry a chance to try products before ordering big quantities and having to push it out into an already overcrowded market place. It also gave me a chance to pick up some things I had always wanted to try … and some items I definitely didn’t need but good luck trying to stop me from buying them.
