Essential foods for healthy living

With so many diets, fads, weightless programs and the overall push towards fitspiration, it’s hard to know what you should and shouldn’t be changing in your life. A desire to get healthy is the hardest part, once you have the desire the rest won’t seem like a massive effort but what’s the first thing you can do upon making that realisation? Change your fuel!

I’ve never been a fan of taking vitamins or a bunch of pills to make me feel better. My train of thought has always been to tough it out or just eat better, but since becoming vegan I’ve learnt that not everything can be solved with food choices. My health has improved dramatically just by changing my diet but like with any diet change there are certain nutrients you may need that aren’t in your food, or your body naturally does not process as it should. This is where nutritional supplements really make a difference.

Americans spent almost $320 billion on prescription medications in 2011 (source: Take Part) so I’m sharing with you which vitamins I’ve been taking, what they do and how they help me. Prior to becoming vegan I had a long-term relationship with bloating. I would bloat as soon as I ate or drank something and the pain would last for hours, usually easing just in time for my next meal. It was uncomfortable, it impacted negatively on my life and most of all it made me feel & look bad. Due to a major diet and lifestyle change I no longer have those issues but I know many people who do. My recommendation is moving to a plant-based diet, it has worked wonders for me, but I was curious if there were other ways to relieve a bloating gut so I asked celebrity nutritionist and chef, Zoe Bingley-Pullin, for her recommendations.

Female Hair Loss Before and After

Female hair loss and hair thinning are a growing sector within the beauty market. I used to think female hair loss was a beauty issue and as such could be treated with beauty products. Self-inflicted hair loss is my most common concern. I blamed my tight braids, hair irons and chemical damage. However, the fact remains that the leading causes for female hair loss are health related.

When my normal amount of hair fall dramatically increased, with noticeable receding of my hairline, I panicked. I didn’t know where to begin with treating it but I couldn’t understand why it was happening. I’d stop styling my hair in tight do’s, I rarely heat style and I haven’t dyed my hair in almost 2 years. I ruled out self-inflicted hair loss so I went straight to my GP (doctor) to ask for advice. It turns out that my female hair loss was completely reversible for less than $20!  Continue Reading
