Banned Animal Testing

Yesterday in Part 1 of my feature about animal testing we looked at the experiments, the reasons behind them and tried to clarify some of the confusing misconceptions. In Part 2 we are going to look specifically at the European Union (EU) ban on animal testing, what it means and if it will have any impact.

The New Ban

To understand the new ban that was implemented on 11 March 2013 you need to know about the ban they started with in 2009. To give you a brief summary, in 2009 the European Union (EU) implemented a ban that cosmetic products and ingredients could not be tested on animals within its borders. This did have some impact but mostly it just moved testing to other parts of the world.

The new European Union ban will make it illegal, from 11 March 2013, to import or market a cosmetic product within the European Union if it contains ingredients that have been animal-tested outside of the EU after 11 March 2013. It therefore prohibits the sale of newly animal-tested cosmetics.

The Truth About Cruelty Free Beauty Header

Right now you are probably either for or against animal testing, but how much do you really know about the practice? When I decided years ago that I would be against animal testing it was purely because I didn’t like the idea of animals being used to benefit humans. I had no idea what the tests actually were, and as stupid as this sounds, I thought it would just involve a lab assistant applying blush to the cheeks of a monkey or applying body lotion to a rat. The details of what the tests were didn’t interest me until a couple of years ago, and that was because I wanted to be a more informed consumer. Now that the EU has banned animal testing, it has brought the animal testing debate back into the spotlight and frankly, I am confused once again.

Not so long ago I implemented ‘Animal Cruelty Policy’ disclaimers in all my product reviews as a result of many readers asking to know more about the brands I was reviewing. Since the EU ban was announced earlier this year I have received even more questions, so with the help of some amazing cosmetic experts we are going to explore what animal testing is and how the EU ban may affect you. In Part 1 we explore what experiments are involved in animal testing, the different classifications and common misunderstandings. In Part 2 (tomorrow) we look at the EU ban and how that may or may not change things for the global beauty industry.

The one thing I always aim to do at The Plastic Diaries is give you all the information so you can make an informed choice. I must point out that in researching this article I did also express interest to a number of cosmetic companies that do test on animals, hoping they would participate and shed some light on why they run these experiments but none of them wished to be part of this article. Hopefully I have still succeeded to understand their point of view without their input.

Today we kick of Foundation Week with a very special entry. It is not often you find a make-up brand that is Australian made and 100% certified organic. In these tough times it is a true rarity and I am so proud to tell the world that Zuii is one of ours (…. until they do something wrong and then, in true Aussie fashion, we will blame them on another country, Exhibit A: Mel Gibson). Professional beauty blogger Kimberly Nissen of The Plastic Diaries shares her personal blogger burnout story and experience

This article is Part 1 of a three-part series about my personal experience with Blogger Burnout – My Demise + My Recovery + My Future

I started The Plastic Diaries in 2008, became a full-time blogger in 2010 and vanished from the blogging universe in 2015. Where did I go? Why? What happened to me? These are questions that have been asked of me during my 18+ month disappearance. The short answer was blogger burnout – a rarely spoken of condition that is fast becoming a serious concern amongst the influencer industry. Have you ever followed a blogger and notice that one day they have just disappeared? Their blog stopped posting new content, their social media went untouched – it happens often. In my almost 9 years of blogging I have lost count of the bloggers that have come and gone, most of which I have no idea why or where they went.

Upon my return to blogging at the end of last year I’ve put off explaining what exactly occurred in my life. I confided in a few select friends and trusted individuals about my story but I’ve brushed over it with the wider community by saying the cause was “personal stuff”. I don’t believe bloggers owe anyone an explanation when they disappear but I know that when my favourites have gone AWOL I’ve missed them and been concerned for their wellbeing. I didn’t want to be another blogger who vanished without a trace and leave you wondering. I also believe Continue Reading
