FAT GIRL BEAUTY PROBLEMS

For a long time I’ve been learning startling things about the human body from the TV show, Embarrassing Bodies. Recently I discovered the spin-off, Embarrassing Fat Bodies, and immediately thought to myself,”hey now, isn’t this just going to be a whole show of fat shaming?”. I was wrong, it’s actually incredibly informative but it also made me realise something I hadn’t noticed previously. As I’ve discussed many times, my weight yoyo’s dramatically but something that clicked while I watched this show was that there are certain beauty issues that flare-up when I’m heavier. These are Fat Girl Beauty Problems.

All of these ailments can present in any person – age, weight, race, etc is irrelevant, but I’ve personally found they’re at their worst when I’m carrying extra flub. The emotional and health issues a girl can face from being overweight is enough to deal with. It goes without saying that losing weight is the best solution for these problems but I’m going to tell you how you can ease the burden in the meantime. Sharon-Lee Studio Woollahra Front Room

If you haven’t seen me rant about just how important eyebrows are, you are in for a treat. If you have had the pleasure previously you are still in for a treat as I share with you a walk down memory lane before I share my latest brow makeover. Oh and you can be sure there are some horrendous photos of just how bad I let my brows grow out.

Memory Lane

Eyebrows weren’t always something I paid attention to. In fact, I didn’t even know they existed until my late teens. I just saw them as another part of the face but something you couldn’t do anything about. How I wish someone had brought it to my attention earlier because the almost-monobrow I sported for many years should have been killed off as first sight. Nevertheless, I did eventually discover the hair above my nose could be removed and voila, I had two eyebrows. Many years later I discovered Sharon-Lee when she launched her lavish salon in Sydney’s Double Bay. My mother bought me a gift voucher to have a brow makeover and I remember being excited but extremely nervous. The most hair I had ever removed from my face was just that part above my nose and it was only one quick strip of wax. Sharon-lee herself wasn’t doing my eyebrows but I did meet her briefly and I remember thinking WOW that woman has amazing eyebrows. It was a lightbulb moment for me as I realised it was possible to have good-looking brows. I had never thought of eyebrows in that way before.

My time in the brow chair was Continue Reading

The options for at-home hair removal are endless, but for those who like waxing it seems the options are limited to one messy form or another. Veet are one of the leaders in at-home waxing options and it seems they will never give up trying to find a convenient, mess-free way to achieve the perfect waxing experience. Their latest innovation is the EasyWax Electrical Roll-On Kit, a handheld device that heats a cartridge of wax which is applied to the skin via the rolling applicator. It is a promising concept but does it work?

As I have been busy reviewing razor kits of late, I roped in another person to be my guinea pig. I must warn you that unlike the ads you see on television or in print magazines, these pictures are taken while trialling the product on a real life hairy leg.

September. The start of Spring (in Australia) and a very welcome change of temperature, while the northern hemisphere move into fall. It is the time where we switch our wardrobes, makeup, skincare and almost every part of our lives. In beauty, we have seen a big change this time around. September is a big month.

So far I have welcomed 98 new products going on sale this month. It is the most new launches I have seen since starting this series in March but I also believe the most in my entire 2 and a bit years of writing The Plastic Diaries. With this huge number of new beauty products you can bet that creating this months list was awfully difficult. Continue Reading

Professional beauty blogger Kimberly Nissen of The Plastic Diaries shares her personal blogger burnout story and experience

This article is Part 1 of a three-part series about my personal experience with Blogger Burnout – My Demise + My Recovery + My Future

I started The Plastic Diaries in 2008, became a full-time blogger in 2010 and vanished from the blogging universe in 2015. Where did I go? Why? What happened to me? These are questions that have been asked of me during my 18+ month disappearance. The short answer was blogger burnout – a rarely spoken of condition that is fast becoming a serious concern amongst the influencer industry. Have you ever followed a blogger and notice that one day they have just disappeared? Their blog stopped posting new content, their social media went untouched – it happens often. In my almost 9 years of blogging I have lost count of the bloggers that have come and gone, most of which I have no idea why or where they went.

Upon my return to blogging at the end of last year I’ve put off explaining what exactly occurred in my life. I confided in a few select friends and trusted individuals about my story but I’ve brushed over it with the wider community by saying the cause was “personal stuff”. I don’t believe bloggers owe anyone an explanation when they disappear but I know that when my favourites have gone AWOL I’ve missed them and been concerned for their wellbeing. I didn’t want to be another blogger who vanished without a trace and leave you wondering. I also believe Continue Reading
